We begin the new week (and month) with a simple exercise in considering the books on our shelves and what they communicate about ourselves and our world. Michael K considers family, history and legacy as well as aesthetics, exhibitions and the intellectual life as he guides us through some of the volumes that have shaped him.
So fun to read about your book collection and inspire me to think about our own. My husband and I used to have a large collection and then we moved five (!) times and had to scale it down. It hurt.
I love your descriptions of the items you place on the bookshelves — items that are meaningful to your family and your experiences. For some time I resisted that and thought bookshelves should be “pure.” Now our shelves are very similar to yours; all kinds of curious items that have meaning or bring us joy. I have come to accept that we are most likely more bohemian in our home decor than I wanted or expected. But that’s life! I sometimes think about my 14-year-old self. She would have loved looking at our bookshelves and read through the books! That makes me happy.
Nice piece. I can strongly relate to the love of collecting books.
