Although I'm mad about true mysteries or detective stories, I don't read fictional mysteries. I'm at a loss to solve the mystery you pose. But your essay has left me considering the enormous impact of the word "uninspired."

On that note, my daughter is planning her wedding dinner menu and her fiancee declared that he would like Yukon Gold mashed potatoes. His mother (who I really like a lot for the record) told him that mashed potatoes were uninspired. He, as any self-respecting groom, ignored her advice and selected the Yukon gold mashed potatoes. I've been giggling ever since at the idea of changing the wording of the menu to "uninspired Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes." 💜

Any kind of mashed potatoes is an inspired choice, whether from the Yukon or Sainsbury's.

It all boils down (if you'll pardon the pun!) to how you sell it! 🤣

Those crimson-coloured fish are surely a red herring.... oh, okay. 😳 Yup. I see what you did there...

That was good though, innit. I mean "red herrings" is so old school

The rhomboidal narrative shape is vastly underrated.

Personally, I prefer the trapezoidal narrative, especially those that employ the non-Euclidean central motif.

Some clues for the Deadly at Midnight puzzle

Never let it be said that I would willingly stand by while my readers are floundering in the dark in their attempts to solve the puzzle I set in my Deadly at Midnight review. I wrote:

"There is something special about this book review. What do you think it is? Please say in the comments."

Here are some clues. I’ll reveal the answer soon. I shared these clues with paid subscribers, before publishing them more widely.

1. The issue is with the book, not the content of the book.

2. Think about the name of the character Jason Fox.

3. Think about the reported interview with the author.

4. Think about the supposed structure of the book, and that of the series as a whole.
