A new year, a new direction

The Omnibus was dead: to begin with. It was a valiant effort and week after week throughout 2022 it featured a tremendous collection of independent essayists, storytellers, visual artists and poets currently working online today. In many respects it was ahead of its time.  

But this is a new year and with it comes a renewed focus and a new direction. 

The feedback from the Omnibus was that there was just too much good stuff and with 25+ pieces being collected and presented each week it simply proved to be too much of a good thing. The paradox of choice kicked in. Readers reported that they felt overwhelmed and almost regretful that they were unable to keep up. 

So we’re going to fix these issues and build upon the foundation we have set, and in doing so we are going to grow the audience, the influence and the prestige of the Social Club throughout this year and beyond. The Soaring Twenties Social Club will become a label that will stand for the highest quality online writing. A name on which you can trust. 

From February a free subscriber to this Substack will receive three new weekly pieces from our deep roster of immensely talented creators- there will be essays, fiction, art, poetry and more. We’re taking all the things that made blogging great (the heartfelt and personal nature, the original ideas and viewpoints, the cadence) and will be using the Substack system to reach far and wide. 

No matter how time-pressed you are each new week there will be a new delight, a new piece of art (and we mean art not content) waiting in your inbox. Nothing will be paywalled and there won’t be any clickbait or hot takes about the big news and social media talking points of the day. We are not interested in that exhausted paradigm. 

While others may complain about how culture is stuck, about its top down nature, about how it does not speak to real lives and real human experiences, we will be striving for change.  

Over the coming weeks we will unveil our founding principles- an editorial practice which will guarantee we only produce the highest quality, entertaining, heartfelt, meaningful, and anti-mimetic art possible- and we will fully outline what we intend to do with all future revenue. This is a subscriber funded, not-for-profit initiative. All money will be used in the process of funding future works and lead to the creation of real world tangible artefacts- books, anthologies, visual arts and more. 

This is going to be the journey of a lifetime.
