Symmetry
A short story
After making his debut with the incredible- and deservedly well received- short story Deagle Morgan Beatty is back with a new piece of fiction. And far from showing any signs of the sophomore slump Morgan instead proves again that he’s truly got the eye and the cops for short fiction.
In this time-pressed, low attention span but always online age of ours I believe that short fiction will become an increasingly important, viable and vital part of the cultural vanguard. Which means that writers like Morgan here (and the STSC more generally) will be in a prime position to capitalise and make a mark. I can’t wait.
Enjoy.

I had to step to the right a little, then more, but I overstepped. He told me to move back left a half step, no idea what I was doing, but now I see it. Aha, I’m lined up with the patio door.
The antlers are symmetrical. The shot is set up almost perfectly.
But I’m looking down to my left.
Concentrate on my hoop earrings. They’re my favorite but the least expensive jewelry I own. I wear them nearly every day.
The antlers are to die for, perfect like I’m trying to be, but they just grew that way. They’re heavy. I do and I don’t feel like I’m holding something dead, like leather, or food.
I’m annoyed at this moment, not because he is making me stand in a hundred different places, trying to get his perfectly lined up shot, but because of my face.
I’m putting on a double chin without gaining weight. That’s the fat moving from my boobs to my face.
I always looked good in short hair but now I’m dreaming of hair past my shoulders. I do the math.
I’ll be forty-three years old when my hair gets that long.

The camera’s always right. I can’t find the option that lets you change the date, much less that he’d ever tell me how. I don’t know our wireless password. He put it in my laptop and my phone for me.
A little to the left for a final shot, but I overstepped, so the last one didn’t make the cut.
He’s trying so hard.
